If you’re self-employed, you have to fill in a Self Assessment tax return every year. Each April or May HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will send you a letter telling you to complete a tax return or a paper tax return.
You’ll be asked for information about profits from your business and other income that you have to pay tax on – such as rental income. This is used to work out how much tax and National Insurance contributions you have to pay. You must provide the correct information and get it to HMRC on time.
Who needs to complete a Self Assessment tax return?
Not everyone needs to complete a tax return. If your tax affairs are straightforward you may already pay all of the tax due on your earnings or pensions through your tax code.
But you may need to complete a tax return if you have more complicated tax affairs, even if you already pay tax through your tax code. There are also certain circumstances in which you will always need to complete a tax return – for example if you’re:
self-employed
a company director
a trustee
receiving foreign income
The tax year runs from 6th April to 5th April each year and this will be the period covered by the tax return, for example, the 2011/12 tax year runs from 6th April 2011 to 5th April 2012.
Your Self Assessment Tax Return is due by the later of 31st October or the later of 31st January if submitted online
Late returns will incur automatic penalties, varying in size depending on how late the return is. The penalties are as follows:
1 day late £100 penalty
3 months late £10 penalty per day, up to a maximum of 90 days
6 months late £300 penalty or 5% of the tax due, whichever is greater
12 months late £300 penalty or 5% of the tax due, whichever is greater
In serious cases you may be asked to pay up to 100% of the tax due as a penalty instead.

3. One of our Registered Self Assessment agents goes to work on your assessment, we may contact you again within this period if we need any additional information.
4. Once completed we will email you a copy of your completed tax return for your approval.
5. If you are happy with the tax return being submitted then we go ahead file everything for you and send you a confirmation once this is done.
